Burma has released more than 500 prisoners, who the opposition NLD says may include all remaining political detainees.
Estimates of the number of political prisoners left in jail vary, but rights groups say about 300 are still held.
The move comes just a week before Burma's President Then Sein is due to visit the United Nations in New York.
Over the last year, the government has released many high-profile political detainees as part of a general amnesty.
The civilian-led, but military-backed, government has enacted a series of political and social reforms, which includes relaxing of media laws, legalising protests and the release of hundreds of political prisoners.
"We're optimistic that these are the remaining political prisoners," said Naing Naing, a central executive committee member of Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party.
The government has not said who the more than 500 prisoners freed in this latest batch are - but the opposition National League for Democracy believes it could include all the remaining political detainees, a significant milestone for Burma, reports the BBC's Jonathan Head in Bangkok.
Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has begun a trip to the United States, her first visit to the country in two decades.
During her 18-day trip she will be presented with the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honour in the US, among other awards.
